How to get to El Castillo

IF DEPARTING FROM MANAGUA OR GRANADA

You can reach San Carlos from Managua or Granada by car, plane or boat. Once in San Carlos, you can take any of the several boats that do the daily service from San Carlos  to El Castillo.  

 

  • Managua/Granada to San Carlos by car:

The close to 300Km long trip is a paved road that mostly runs through the great landscapes of Chontales and River San Juan regions. Once in San Carlos, a parking lot is conveniently located next to the main deck.

Follow the carretera a El Rama and take your right at Puente Lovago. 110 Kms of new road going southwards will take you to San Carlos.

In case you are leaving from Granada, take the main road to Managua. Just after passing the town of Masaya, turn right towards Tipitapa (you will avoid having to go through Managua). Tipitapa is located in the Panamerican Highway. Once there you can reach San Benito and then follow same directions above.

 

  • Managua/Granada to San Carlos by plane:

La Costeña offers a 45 min daily flight departing from Managua at 1:00pm. Visit http://www.lacostena.com.ni/  or call +(505) 2263-2142 for more information. If leaving from Granada, ask your hotel to book a transport to Managua international airport and just be sure to book your flight in advance.

 

  • Managua/Granada to San Carlos by boat:

The Empresa Portuaria Nacional http://www.epn.com.ni/ offers a boat service to San Carlos departing from Granada Monday and Thursday at 2:00pm. It does stop at Ometepe Island, Morritos and San Miguelito to finally reach San Carlos at around 5:00am the next morning. Although this trip offers great perspectives of lake Nicaragua, the 15 hours duration make it our third recommended option. However contact the port authority for new scheduled ferries.

 

IF DEPARTING FROM LOS CHILES (COSTA RICA)

Once after having passed Costa Rican customs at Los Chiles take one of the daily boats to San Carlos – approximately 1 hour long with the following schedule:5:20am, 10:30am, 12:30pm, 3:30pm

The boat stops directly at the Nicaraguan customs building in San Carlos for a quick checking. San Carlos dock is located just 100mts walking distance. From San Carlos dock you may choose to take one of the boats that do the daily service between San Carlos and El Castillo (see San Carlos to El Castillo)


IF DEPARTING FROM LA FORTUNA (COSTA RICA)

Take one of the many buses providing daily service from La Fortuna to Los Chiles, close to the border with Nicaragua. From Los Chiles please see instructions above.

FROM SAN CARLOS TO EL CASTILLO

Once in San Carlos, the easiest way to get to El Castillo is by taking one of the several fast boats that do the daily 1,5h service to El Castillo at around USD 6.

You can also choose to take the slower boat. It is a 3h long trip in which you´ll enjoy watching the locals come and go in their main mean of transportation.

There are daily fast and slow boats departing from El Castillo to San Carlos:

Fast boat El Castillo – San Carlos: 5:20am, 11:30am, 3:30pm.  1,5h trip 

Slow boat El Castillo – San Carlos: 5am, 7am, 2pm. 3h trip

HOW DO I GET FROM SAN CARLOS BACK TO MANAGUA OR TO LOS CHILES (COSTA RICA)?

n case you came by car, the main parking lot is located next to San Carlos main dock. From there just follow road to Acoyapa and then to Managua or Granada (see directions above).

La Costeña has daily flights to Managua departing San Carlos at 14:00pm . Contact la Costeña for additional information on flights at  http://www.lacostena.com.ni/

Should you choose travelling by boat to Granada, the Schedule is Tuesday and Friday at 2:00pm, arriving to Granada at 5:00am and stopping at San Miguelito, Morritos and Ometepe Island (puerto de Altagracia).
